Inspired by the eponymous light novel series by Aneko Yusagi and Seira Minami, ‘The Rising of the Shield Hero’ or ‘Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari’ is a dark fantasy isekai anime. The show revolves around Naofumi Iwatani, an ordinary otaku from Japan who is summoned to the kingdom of Melromarc in an alternate world as one of his cardinal heroes. Endowed with a powerful shield, he is tasked with protecting the humans from the interdimensional horde of monsters that attack the kingdom at regular intervals. The isekai series was first released on January 9, 2019 and became an instant hit.
However, the second installment of the anime has failed to rekindle the same hype, and it has received a lot of criticism from critics for its poor writing and predictable storyline and fight sequences. After the premiere of the Season 2 finale, viewers should be eager to learn more about the show’s revamp and its chances of a comeback. If you also love the show and have the same curiosity, we’ve got you covered.
The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 3 Release Date
‘The Rising of the Shield Hero’ season 2 was released on April 6, 2022 and ended a few weeks later on June 29, 2022. The second episode consists of thirteen episodes, each with a running time of approximately 22-24 minutes.
As for the renewal of the isekai series, we have good news for the fans. The anime was given the green light for its second and third seasons in 2019 at the Crunchyroll Expo. Although ‘The Rising of the Shield Hero’ season 2 was scheduled to premiere in 2021, the release dates were postponed due to the global coronavirus pandemic – which, of course, also delayed the third episode.
In the post-credits scene of the Season 2 finale, the continuation of the series was reaffirmed by a short message stating, “Naofumi and his allies are still on their arduous journey.” The second installment only includes up to 9 volumes of Aneko Yusagi and Seira Minami’s light novel series, 22 volumes of which are already circulating domestically. Therefore, the anime’s production is likely already underway, thanks to ongoing innovation coupled with the availability of source material.
While the final season didn’t create the same hype as the first episode and also has an average rating on most online platforms, those factors are no longer determining the anime’s return. Taking into account all the above factors and assuming production is not delayed and is already underway, we can expect season 3 of ‘The Rising of the Shield Hero’ to premiere sometime early 2023†
The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 3 Plot: What Could It Be About?
In Season 3, Naofumi and his party go to the land of mercenaries known as Zeltoble. There he learns about the Colosseum, a place where warriors compete in groups or individually for fame and fortune. Though he’s not interested in either, the Shield Hero will eventually join the competition when he learns that a vicious slave market is being run under the Colosseum.
However, freeing the half-human slaves will not be as easy as he imagined. Meanwhile, Raphtalia will encounter Sadeena, an old family friend who was gone when the first’s family was brutally murdered by an interdimensional horde of monsters. Once Raphtalia and Sadeena’s battle in the Colosseum is over, Naofumi will free her from Zeltoble. Sadeena will eventually develop a romantic interest in the Shield Hero and will be quite vocal about her feelings.
However, Naofumi will reject her flirty advances. Meanwhile, the Shield Hero will have to deal with assassins determined to kill him. Despite the lingering dangers in his path, Naofumi will shift his focus to finding the other Cardinal Heroes, which will get him in more trouble.
