Earlier at Daylight Saving Time Display; Episode 5, Maelstorm
The last two episodes of Summer Time Rendering were the most informative. However, they confused viewers even more. The lady from the ferry is apparently able to kill the shadow and save Shinpei. She introduces herself as Nagumo Ryonusuke, and Shinpei recognizes herself as a novelist, though she’s not sure what Nagumo’s intentions are, because before we can even get into her details, the shadows make a mess. Nagumo helps Shinpei to his feet and they rush to the festival.
However, they find that everyone at the festival is dead, and there is a pile of corpses. Shinpei’s mind is frozen and he inadvertently tries to count the shadows. Shinpei even sees Sou’s shadow kill Sou while trying to kill Mio. While Nagumo tries to shoot the almighty shadow from the guns, she is unable to do so, and the Giant Shadow mimics Nagumo and creates a shadow woman who shoots her. Shinpei does his best to save Mio, but she dies and becomes the food for all of Shadow’s mother.
It turns out that the summer festival was the means to revive all the “mother” of the shadows. The pile of corpses begins to disappear as the shadow takes over the entire island. The only doctor on the island, it seems he has some idea what shadows are about, especially their mother who appears to be a little girl. While Giant Shadow hurt Shinpei, he also informs that Shinpei has their mother’s eye that can control time.
Almost all the people on the island are dead except for Shinpei, Nagumo and Ushio (because she is a shadow). Seeing no hope of saving anyone, Shinpei resorts to suicide so he can start over. He asks Nagumo to shoot him in the head and tells her that every time he dies he can go back on July 22. Nagumo tries to shoot Shinpei in the head and tells him to find her next time, and she will save him. Nagumo successfully shoots Shinpei in the head with Ushio’s Shadow stopping the giant shadow. As Shinpei goes back in time, he sees the whole picture of the island and also encounters Shadow’s “mother”.
Ushio’s aura comes back and tells Shinpei there is a limit to the power. Shinpei is back on July 22, but a little past his last checkpoint. He concludes that every time he dies, he will be called forward a little bit from the last point until he can’t go back at all. When the episode ends, we’ll also see Ushio on the shore of the beach on July 22.
