Ayumu Tanaka, a freshman, abruptly leaves the Kendo Club to join the illegal Shogi Club. The club’s shogi chairman and maestro, Urushi Yaotome, is overjoyed to have a partner. Urushi strives to be Ayumu’s shogi teacher and student role model as his elder. All too often she finds herself turning red with embarrassment! Ayumu is honest and stone-faced, and she has no problem calling Urushi “cute.” Despite Ayumu liking her, she refrains from confessing and vows to beat her first in a match of shogi.
The two students experience a variety of humorous and endearing adventures as they attend school and play shogi games. Although Ayumu enjoys spending time with Urushi, he is still a considerable distance from beating her at shogi. Will Ayumu ever get a chance to tell Urushi how he really feels, given the promise he’s made to himself?

In their school’s shogi club, there are only two members: Ayumu Tanaka and Urushi Yaotome. Ayumu compliments Urushi on her appearance upon their first meeting. Suspecting that he has feelings for her, Urushi tries to make him confess by giving him a hug and then a kiss, but to no avail as Ayumu has vowed to reveal his feelings after hitting her. Later, when Ayumu is invited to the kendo club, Urushi notices, but is relieved when he says he will stay with her. Urushi asks Ayumu what he would do in those circumstances if one of her friends decides not to join the club because she has a boyfriend.

Urushi speculates that he may want her as a girlfriend after hearing his response, but Ayumu keeps his word. Later, Urushi goes to class, despite Ayumu’s encouragement. Urushi tries to make herself stronger after succumbing to Ayumu’s flattery again, but relents when she approaches and sees her end of the shogi board. Ayumu asks Urushi to use his umbrella after school when they go home together. She happily accepts it and lets him know that they might share it again in the future.
Urushi’s classmate Rin Kagawa laughs at her for always being close to Ayumu on sports day. Ayumu performs well in his tournaments which:
leads some guys to approach him and ask him to join their sports team. They even deny knowing about their shogi club when Urushi informs them about it. Ayumu promises a dejected Urushi that he will draw attention to their group and recruit more members. Ayumu is even more driven when she says it would make her happy. The three-legged race that follows causes them to trip over each other as they cling tensely.
Later, after receiving a challenge on a piece of paper, Ayumu carries Urushi towards the referee, scaring her. After Ayumu begs him to join the shogi club in the library later, Sakurako hypnotizes Mikage Takeru Kakuryu to do so, but they soon discover that they can’t go home together. Ayumu informs Urushi that he has added a new member to their group after school. They enjoy taiyaki to celebrate, and Urushi makes fun of herself by complimenting Ayumu by saying she loves the piece of shogi that bears his name. Sakurako and Takeru talk while eating taiyaki elsewhere.
Urushi makes an effort to draw Ayumu’s attention to her new haircut. After Sakurako leaves with Takeru, Ayumu jealously betrays Urushi for praising Takeru. Sakurako replies that she doesn’t like anyone when Takeru asks at the library. He lies to her and says he doesn’t like anyone if she asks him the same question. They commit to support each other once they find true love through it. Ayumu later asks Urushi out on a date. Ayumu looks for her at their cultural festival after not objecting and discovers her jakisoba. That’s why he chooses to help her.
Now that she is free, Urushi agrees to the date, and they enjoy the festival the most. Urushi admits this is her first date after Rin catches them and teases them, but Ayumu is glad she’s given the chance. Once inside a scary mansion, Urushi is startled to see Ayumu holding her hand. While huddled in the haunted house with Sakurako, Takeru begins to feel anxious and screams loudly, startling Urushi. Later, when Urushi says she had fun at the festival, Ayumu asks her to call him by his first name, which makes her feel uneasy.
