Recap – Hire a Girlfriend Season 2 Episode 5
After spending the night with Ruka, Kazuya realizes that his room is now quite messy, and he has to clean it up. He opens the gate to his apartment to empty the trash and discovers that Chizuhara is doing the same. As the duo exchange greetings, Chizuru wonders why Kazuya seems stunned. Kazuya tries to keep calm as she approaches. While he hopes she doesn’t know that Ruka is spending the night with him, their brief encounter doesn’t go as he imagined.
When Chizuru throws her garbage, Kazuya follows her. Chizuru turns and asks Kazuya if Ruka spent the previous night in his apartment. Kazuya is stunned by this sudden question and cannot answer it coherently. Frustrated, Chizuru notices that all men are like that, so she’s not surprised. Before walking away, she notes that she finds it unsurprising that men are like that.

Kazuya tries to follow her and tells her the truth, but Chizuru just slams the door when she reaches her apartment. Kazuya hopes he can tell her that he didn’t sleep with Ruka last night because he only loves her. Chizuru decides to clear things up and give her a present in honor of her support over the months as her birthday is only a few days away. Since he has never bought a gift for a girl before, he has no idea what to buy. So he hires Sumi for a day so he can ask her for advice. They take pictures together and then go shopping. Despite Sumi’s seeming happiness, Kazuya surprises her by asking her how Chizuru feels special.
Though Kazuya doesn’t recognize it at first, Chizuru is the girl in the pink costume in the show. She takes him to a children’s show where a superhero fights villains. The fact that she works as a rental girlfriend and attends acting school while doing other gigs to fulfill her dreams is impressive to Kazuya. Kazuya assumes that since Sumi doesn’t talk much, she wants him to use the kid’s show as a clue to find the perfect gift for Chizuru. Since Kazuya is inspired by Sumi’s dedication to fulfill her acting dream, he believes that any gift she considers will be especially suitable for her. Before going home, Kazuya thanks Sumi for all the help he’s received and that gifts aren’t always about the money. Sumi continues by explaining that gifts are more than just money, but also about emotional connections.

She takes a bath and goes outside to get some fresh air. When she returns to her apartment later that evening, there is no doubt that it is a gift from Kazuya. Chizuru just wants to relax after a busy day. So she dials her grandmother’s number and calls quickly. Kazuya sent her a note expressing his gratitude for the help she had received and even indicating that she and Ruka hadn’t spoken to each other the night before.
She discovered the note when she opened her door. While Chizuya seems pleased with the gift, Kazuya panics in the neighboring apartment over Kazuya’s possible reaction to the gift once she reads the note. After unpacking the gift further, she finds Japanese cured plums. They are said to help people relax and are ideal for someone like Chizuru who works too hard.
