In the town of Orth’s Belchero Orphanage lives a young orphan named Riko. The Abyss, a mysterious, huge pit that extends far below the Earth’s surface, is surrounded by the city. The Abyss is a famous hunting ground for so-called Cave Raiders who make perilous descents into the mist-filled pit in search of all the artifacts they can discover.

The Abyss is home to artifacts and remnants of civilizations long gone. Recovering the Abyss can be risky, as the Curse of the Abyss, a mysterious and potentially deadly condition, develops upon takeoff. Few have ventured into the lower reaches and returned to share their experiences, as the effects of the curse become more severe the deeper one travels. Lyza, Riko’s mother, is one of the mythical Cave Raiders known as the White Whistles and is said to have died after taking a “final dive” into the Abyss.

Riko’s greatest ambition in life is to be a White Whistle like her mother. One day she finds a robot in the first level of the Abyss that resembles a human boy and names him Reg. Reg is smuggled into Belchero by Riko and her companions, who immediately accept him into their close-knit community.

Later, other items are discovered from the bottom of the Abyss, most notably Lyza’s White Whistle, pages of investigations and discoveries she had made, and a message that appears to be for Riko stating that she is waiting there. Riko says goodbye to her friends and sneaks into the Abyss with Reg because she is desperate for her mother.

Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun Episode Recap

A young girl named Vueko flees her cruel guardian into the seemingly distant past and joins the pilgrim group known as the Ganja, led by Wazukyan and Belaf, in their quest for the fabled Golden City at the bottom of the Abyss. After all but one of the boats are lost in a storm, Ganja manages to pinpoint the location of the Abyss using a unique compass that Vueko possesses.

The Ganja continue their journey after negotiating with an indigenous tribe, banning an indigenous girl for being barren, and Vueko reluctantly trading her compass for knowledge. Wazukyan decides to let the girl go as a guide when Vueko feels sorry for her. The Ganjas descend further into the Abyss, studying the Curse and overcoming various monsters until, during the fifth tier, they come to a passage pod on the Ido Front that allows them to proceed to the sixth tier.

Using Riko’s recently acquired White Whistle, Riko, Reg, and Nanachi activate the transport pod in the present, which then takes them across the Sea of Bodies, an underground sea filled with the bones and corpses of dead animals. Reg advises Riko to empty himself into the relatively safe confines of the pod due to the long journey and unpredictability of the sixth row. The capsule then arrives at its destination and exits the three steps to enter the sixth tier, the capital of the unreturned.

Riko, Reg and Nanachi are intrigued by the sixth layer and decide to investigate. They discover that the layer has a scorching, desert-like atmosphere, dotted with various ruins and is home to incredibly deadly creatures. Riko tries to send a mail balloon to the top to let Nat and others know she’s okay, but it’s quickly intercepted by the soaring wildlife. The group is constantly under silent surveillance by an unknown entity.

Riko discovers that her White Whistle has already been taken when she wakes up the next morning. To recover the mail balloon, the burglar sneaked into their campsite without them knowing and left them clues, which Nanachi finds. Reg detects the thief’s scent and they chase him until they come to a large building with a single door.

The group enters the building, which has a force field guarding the entrance to fend off the Curse, after all other leads have been exhausted. They are still being observed by the enigmatic entity. The group discovers a settlement in the building full of people who they later learn are Hollows. Majikaja joins the group and accepts their offer to drive them to Riko’s White Whistle.

Riko, Reg, and Nanachi are taken by Majikaja to a sculptor who reshapes Riko’s White Whistle so that it can unleash its full potential. The rest of the hamlet, which is immune to the curse but cannot be evacuated by the Hollows living there, is then shown to the group. In addition, he clarifies that the hamlet is dependent on the trade in ‘value’.

One of the Hollows grabs Meinya and acts rudely to her as they continue to investigate the settlement, hurting Meinya. The village’s defense system is activated in response to Riko’s fear of Meinya’s injury, and it costs the offender Hollow’s possessions, including some parts, to make up for Meinya’s loss of value to Riko.

Riko decides to rent a tavern with her newfound wealth, but becomes unwell from eating filthy food. The Princess of Hollows, Faputa, has turned up outside the village, Majikaja reveals when Reg and Nanachi notice a disturbance outside. Reg heads to the village entrance, where he meets Faputa and her robotic companion after realizing that Faputa must be the one to bring Riko’s White Whistle to the village.

Before one of them was devoured by a monster, the Ganjas previously encountered a group of artificial beings who welcomed them to the sixth tier. Vueko realizes that they are still in danger after arriving in the Golden City.

Reg is confronted by Faputa and thinks he has encountered her in the past. Faputa kidnaps Reg and takes him to her hideout out of concern for the villagers’ sight. However, Faputa is stunned and hurt that Reg can’t remember her, and expresses her outrage at Reg going with Riko instead of her.

Reg chooses to return to the hamlet after realizing Faputa won’t teach him anything, but along the way he sees a shower of eternally accumulated wealth and funeral name tags that Orth has dropped, leaving him wondering what’s up above the ground happens. . After Riko recovers from her food sickness in the village, she goes in search of Reg and Nanachi.

Several Hollows try to kidnap Meinya, but the Hollow that accidentally injured Meinya earlier saves her. Riko befriends the Hollow, names her Maaa and expresses her gratitude for the help. They go to a restaurant, where Riko meets Wazukyan, seen through the eyes of a Hollow. Nanachi learns from Majikaja that Mitty is in Belaf’s care in the meantime. To her horror, Nanachi discovers Mitty safe and sound after traveling in disbelief to Belaf’s lair. Vueko appears to be held elsewhere with several completed Hollows.
