Komi Can’t Communicate Season 2 Episode 4 Recap
Komi is bored at her house trying to figure out what to do on Christmas Eve as she has nothing planned so far. That’s when Komi gets a call from Najimi, who informs her that everyone is having a Christmas party at her house and that she needs to buy them gifts ASAP. Realizing that they will be arriving in a few hours, Komi panics and turns to her brother Shousuke for help.
He reluctantly takes her to the nearest mall, but is reluctant to help her choose presents for her friends. As he is about to leave, Komi insists that he wait a little longer and offers to narrow the gift options down to just 3. Unfortunately, Shousuke is unimpressed when he realizes that Komi is holding decorative candles, a flower vase with reindeer motif and a dancing Santa Claus. Fortunately, after a long search, she finally finds the ideal gift, but then tries to give her wallet to Shousuke so that he will pay and she can avoid talking to a stranger.
Meanwhile, Tadano, Najimi and Komi’s friends from the school are also looking for a present for the birthday boy or girl. Najimi turns the chore into a fun game where you pick a present. Anyone can use a budget of up to 5,000 yen, and the winner will be the one whose gift Komi excites the most. With that clarified, everyone begins to hunt for the ideal gift for the titular protagonist. While some of them can’t think of anything, Yamai says she will donate herself to Komi. Onemine picks pickled plums while Yadano thinks whey protein is the best gift.
As they all begin to share their ideas, it becomes increasingly clear that they disagree. However, Tadano picks up a huge stuffed black cat toy, which costs 8,000 yen. He argues that instead of choosing gifts separately, they should offer Komi the plush toy together, which will turn out to be cheaper for them individually as well. Everyone seems to like the idea and eventually they buy the stuffed animal. In the evening, Komi’s friends come to her house and surprise her with the gift.
Once they’re in the house, everyone starts playing a hilarious brain game to figure out where Komi will end up sitting so they can be with her. However, she chooses to sit with Tadano. To make things interesting, they start playing the King Game, where participants are given numbered sticks, and one of them becomes the king, who can randomly command anyone to do anything. When given the chance, Najimi makes Komi dress like Santa Claus. While this isn’t difficult when Komi’s mother joins in and becomes the king, she has Tadano kiss Shinobino on the cheek.
Komi Can’t Communicate Season 2 Episode 4 Ending: Does Komi Like the Birthday Surprise?
When Komi’s friends arrive at her house and surprise her with the big present, she just hangs on the hug and doesn’t react much. While some of them are beginning to speculate that she didn’t like the gift, this was not an uncommon reaction from the titular protagonist, who has a communication disorder. But to their surprise, Komi doesn’t even try to thank them for the gift, even when they spend time with her at her house. Later, when they say goodbye and go home, Tadano and his classmates begin to feel that she didn’t really like the gift, and there could be no more doubts about it.
A strange disappointment soon engulfs them, but the silence is soon broken by the sound of cell phone notifications. All have received a text from Komi expressing her sincere gratitude and thanking them for celebrating her birthday this Christmas. She even clarifies that they shouldn’t judge how she feels about the gift from her initial response, which is an indirect allusion to her social awkwardness and inability to express herself properly.
