The highly anticipated slice-of-life series Kawaii Dake Ja Nai Shikimori-San or Shikimori’s Not Just A Cutie recently released its second episode on April 17, 2022 and it gave us more insight into our two protagonists who are worlds apart but just plain what each other needs in their lives. The show is about Izumi and Shikimori – two high school sweethearts who have a happy and healthy relationship. Despite the fact that one is a popular and beautiful person who stands out from the crowd and the other is a boring, unhappy, simple male protagonist, the two work quite well. It’s the classic case of opposites attract.
Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie is a play about the clichéd popular boy next door and girl next door plot – only the roles are reversed and we see Shikimori-san being the one wearing the pants in the relationship. She constantly protects the meek and passive Izumi from his own bad luck and is a totally cool girl who wins her boyfriend kabedons and the hearts of all customers while bowling. Despite trying her best to be cute in Izumi’s eyes, she makes him fall in love with her even more by being her real, trustworthy and cool self.
The next installment of the series is Episode 3, which will take place next week. Read on to learn more about the details!
Kawaii Dake Ja Nai Shikimori-San Episode 2 Summary
In Episode 2 of Shikimori Is Not Just a Cutie, titled “Wind and Clouds, Ball Sports Tournament!”, we get a glimpse of what Shikimori is like to those around her. The dimensions of how different our protagonists are broadened. The episode is a classic anime trope of a tournament episode – the boys have a soccer game while the girls have a volleyball tournament.
Izumi, unlucky, is usually seen as suffering and hurt by multiple incidents, except for those times when Inuzuka or Shikimori look out for him. He is hospitalized in the medical room when a ball lands right in his face and knocks him out. We see a sweet moment of interaction where he confesses to Shikimori how upset he is because he can’t always protect her.
Shikimori is impressed by how Izumi is always supportive and when he comes to watch her volleyball match against the ace of the school team, she gets even more energized. Nekozaki’s team eventually wins because of Shikimori and she is rounded up by crowds of fangirls who totally know how cool she is. This is an important point in the series as we see these two characters come “from different worlds,” in Izumi’s words. Shikimori is charming by nature, beautiful enough to be popular and can stand out with her athletic skills and cool disposition. Izumi on the other hand is ordinary, just like any other man, and extremely ‘uncool’ due to his clumsiness and passive behavior.
Still, we’re blessed with a healthy ending where these two talk about how different they both are, but are exactly what the other needs.
