Drifting Dragons is a fantasy adventure manga that was launched in 2016 by Kodansha in their magazine “Good Afternoon Tokyo”. The manga has been collected in 11 tankobon volumes and is still running. Kodansha USA, under the Kodansha Comics imprint, is publishing the English version of the manga. Due to its popularity, Polygon Pictures produced the anime adaptation of the series. It was released on January 9, 2020 on Netflix Japan. The international release for the anime took place on Netflix in April 2020. And as of now, it only has one season with 12 episodes. The anime was directed by Tadahiro Yoshihira and starred Makoto Uezu as the show writer. The manga series is written and illustrated by Taku Kuwabara.
The story Drifting Dragons is told by a new recruit in a crew of dragon hunters. In this fantastic world of Drifting Dragons that is filled with dragons, there are people who hunt them. Here the dragon hunt is called ‘Draking’. Hunters scour the seas and skies in search of dragons, as they have valuable materials such as oil, food, clothing and medicine. Most of the trade in this world is related to dragons as the body can be harvested in many ways. In this dangerous air there is a ship called Quin Zaza, one of the many ships that sail in this business. And our narrator has just joined their crew.
More about the plot:
The anime series begins with Takita, our narrator, becoming the newest member of the Quin Zaza ship crew. Takita is just a young girl trying to determine her place in this world. Though dragons here are known as giant flying monsters, their bodies are also treasure troves of various medicines, oils, and enough flesh to feed a small village. The economic trade of many port cities and towns relies heavily on the trade in dragons. The manga artist designed it to be similar to fishing villages. So even though “dragons” can be very dangerous, it is an extremely profitable profession. So for crews like Quin Zaza’s, that’s enough to risk their lives for. If they catch a dragon big enough, they’ll be rich, and if they don’t, they’ll die trying.
Mika is just a “draker” aboard the Quin Zaza airship. He has been hunting dragons for a long time and he is also the one who is going to teach our main character Takita the ways of this profession. And not only that, Mika is also a connoisseur of good gourmet food with a specific taste for the exotic. He is known for being very reckless while hunting and will jump from ships to kill a dragon without thinking about it. But almost all of his actions are motivated by his desire to eat dragon meat, which leads to many hilarious antics throughout the show. The other main characters the story focuses on are Jiro, another newcomer, and Vanabelle, another young girl with a past shrouded in mystery.
