The Sound Hashira Tengen Uzui has played a pioneering role in the battle against the demons Gyuutaro and Daki of the higher rank six. In ‘Demon Slayer’ Entertainment District Arc, there were times when he even found the brother-sister duo all alone. Therefore, when the fight came to its end, it was not surprising that he was badly injured with poison slowly spreading through his body. But did the Sound Hashira die? Or did he survive the whole ordeal? If you’re looking for answers to those questions, we’ve got you covered. SPOILERS FORWARD!
Did Tengen Uzui retire or die?
No, the Sound Hashira does not die in the ‘Demon Slayer’ season 2 finale titled ‘No Matter How Many Lives’. Tengen has risked his life to give the Demon Slayers a slim chance where they can simultaneously decapitate the joint holders of the Upper-Rank Six. Unfortunately, he was poisoned quite early in the battle, but despite the aches and pains, he persevered. While he most likely used breathing techniques to slow the spread of venom, Gyuutaro’s venom is strong enough to eventually overwhelm him.
After the battle with Gyuutaro and Daki is won, the Sound Hashira has accepted his fate. He believes he will die surrounded by his three wives. So, Tengen tries to say his last words, only to realize that the poison has stiffened his tongue, and he can’t really say anything. When the grief of dying without expressing itself washes over Tengen, Nezuko arrives out of nowhere and uses Blood Demon Art to burn off all the poison. The Sound Hashira, who was struggling for his life moments earlier, suddenly realizes that he will not die.
While Uzui is safe, the lasting wounds from the violent battle cannot be repaired with Blood Demon Art. He lost an arm and an eye during his battle with the Upper-Rank Six, so his future as Hashira looked very bleak. While all these myriad thoughts about his uncertain future are running through his mind, the serpent Hashira, Obanai Iguro, arrives at Ground Zero. He criticizes Uzui for being so badly injured while fighting the Upper-Rank Six demons and asks when he will manage to recover and rejoin his comrades in the Demon Slayer Corps.
To Obanai’s surprise, Tengen recounts his decision to retire, as he cannot fight in his condition. The Serpent Hashira refuses to accept Tengen’s retirement plans, stating that the Demon Slayer Corps has already been weakened after Kyojuro Rengoku’s death. Plus, the amateur Demon Slayers who recently joined them don’t look very promising at all. Obanai Iguro’s reservations are reasonable, and it’s understandable why he wishes the Sound Hashira to forget about his retirement plans.
Unfortunately, Tengen’s permanent injuries severely limit his fighting abilities. So even after patiently listening to Serpent Hashira’s criticism and advice, Uzui does not give up. He’s made up his mind, and knowing that despite the help of Tanjirou, Inosuke, and Zenitsu, he’s battled so much against the Upper-Rank Six, the Sound Hashira’s decision is definitely spot on, as he won’t be of much use in the struggle after losing one eye and one arm. Fans looking to see him in the future need not be discouraged though, as the Demon Slayer will most likely appear in the Hashira Training Arc and the Infinity Castle Arc.
