Call of the Night Episode 1 Recap
Kou Yamori steps out of his room at night to walk aimlessly through the city. Lately he is frustrated with the lack of meaning in his daily life and starts to push people away. When his classmate suggested Kou, he didn’t think twice before rejecting her romantic advances. Bullied by some of the girls’ friends, Kou continued to claim that he never understood whether it made sense to like someone or not.
Kou’s strange nihilistic worldview has begun to isolate him from the people he knew. So he frantically searched for meaning as he walked under the stars, hoping it would give him some semblance of peace. When his mind is distracted by the constant buzz of his phone, he realizes that people are talking about alcohol and partying in various group chats. Kou, who has not drunk in the past, decides to do so when he sees a vending machine. But just as the can comes out, suddenly a mysterious girl is standing next to him.
Kou is momentarily surprised and claims he picked the wrong can, fearing he’ll be arrested for trying to drink despite being a teenager. However, the mysterious girl claims that she has no intention of reporting him to the police. She goes to question him about insomnia and asks why people stay up at night? Kou states that people usually have plans to stick to them, but the girl disagrees. She claims that it is people’s failure to live life to the fullest during the day that prevents them from sleeping.
She even proves her point by talking to three drunk men at the bus station. As the duo explore the city under the stars, Kou begins to feel a little better and finally overcome thoughts of the uninteresting daily life that has become too heavy for him. His acquaintance later takes Kou to her apartment, much to his surprise. Once they’re inside, she asks him to share the bed with her, promising that he’ll fix his insomnia. Although Kou is a little tense, he decides to pretend to sleep so that he can leave as soon as he gets the chance.
However, Kou doesn’t realize that his newfound acquaintance is wide awake, and when she senses that he is deeply asleep, she bites his neck and begins to drink his blood. When Kou suddenly sits up, she claims it was just a fly, but the blood on her lips says otherwise. When confronted by Kou, she confesses that she is a vampire.
Call of the Night Episode 1 ends: What does Kou want to be a vampire? What’s stopping him from becoming one?
After admitting to being a vampire, Kou’s acquaintance finally introduces herself as Nazuna Nanakusa. She claims she just wanted to drink some of his blood and had no intention of harming him in any way. Kou is initially relieved to learn that he won’t turn into a vampire anytime soon. However, he realizes that the time he spends with Nazuna is the one rare thing that has excited him in a long time. He does not want to return to his normal life, where he has to keep up appearances in front of his family and classmates just to hang out with them.
Kou’s relief quickly turns to disappointment when it dawns on him that his uninteresting life has gone nowhere, and the next morning he will have to go about his daily schedule. Therefore, he asks Nazuna to turn him into a vampire because all that turns him on is exploring the nightlife with her. Unfortunately, Kou then finds out that his new friend can’t really help him with his dilemma. Nazuna reveals that a person can only become a vampire if he has fallen in love with the vampire who drinks his blood.
Since Kou barely knows Nazuna, he is therefore unaffected even after his blood has been sucked by her. But to Nazuna’s surprise, Kou states that he is willing to fall in love with her if it is necessary to live the life he wants. His new boyfriend is naturally embarrassed and states that she doesn’t care if he falls in love with her as long as she can drink his blood.
