Attack on Titan Walls: explanation of the massive structure

We can’t talk about Attack on Titan anime and leave out the Attack on Titan Walls, because that’s something fans wondered when they first saw the anime. We know that anime is huge and weird, so it wouldn’t be surprising if we saw something we haven’t seen before. Some anime have shown what appears to be physical boundaries over the horizon that characters can’t even transcend.

And even that alone wasn’t one of the strangest things we’ve seen. But still this only piqued the interest of the viewers, who wondered how such things work. So as we’ve seen from Attack on Titan, we knew about walls, but only got more about them as the series progressed.

So at first we’d think they were brick walls only meant to hold back the titans. Simply put, take the walls away from Attack on Titan, and then we won’t have much to talk about. Because from the beginning of the anime, we understood that the humans within the walls were the only civilization left, and there was nothing beyond it except Titans roaming around looking for lost humans to eat.

So as a new fan who just started watching such an anime, you should follow the logic and the assumption that the original story told is the real real one. But as we know, when it comes to anime and manga, everything changes depending on how the writer wants it. What was first revealed could just be a misconception or some kind of knowledge that was only limited to one person.

Attack on Titan Walls: The Massive Structures

If you don’t have an in-depth knowledge of Attack on Titan Walls, then we’ll start by looking at the simplest details. But according to legends, the walls seem to be named after the three daughters of Ymir, the founder. And we must not forget that there are three walls as we know them from the anime and the manga.

Attack on Titan Walls
Attack on Titan Walls

The walls in Attack on Titan are the three major structures located on Paradis Island, and they guard the remains of Eldia. They are said to have been built by the 145th King of Eldia, known as Karl Fritz, and this happened a century ago, and he used numerous Colossus Titans to do this. This was an attempt to prevent other countries from attacking the island of Paradis when they threatened that the king would unleash the Titans on the world if they tried to attack the island. Just as a spoiler, if you’re aware of both the anime and the manga, Eren would move to free the Titans within the wall and initiate the rumble.

The walls are as massive as the colossal titans crunching down. So they could grow up to 50 meters high from bottom to top, and they were strong but not really indestructible. We got to see this when the female titan managed to damage part of Sheena’s wall when she tried to climb over it. The Beast Titan was also able to break down Wall Rose’s pieces and use them as projectiles.

Let’s take a closer look at each of the respective walls so that we can see how people of Paradis Island protected themselves from the Titans who would attack from time to time.

Wall Maria

Wal Maria was the outermost wall of the Paradis Island and, like the rest of the walls, was about 50 meters high; in 1845 it was breached by the Colossal Titan and the Armored Titan. Its territory was lost to the Titans during this time, and six years later it was repopulated when the hole in the Shigashina district was closed by Eren, leading to the murder of all the remaining Titans living in the district.

There is also an incident known as the Fall of Wall Maria. This happened tragically and it started when the Shigashina district was attacked by the Colossal, Armored and the Female Titan. The inhabitants of Wall Maria were then forced to retreat to Wall Rose because the Titans had invaded the territory of humanity. So it was no longer safe for them to stay in the ward. It was even said that this event happened for the first time in 100 years, so it came as a huge surprise to the citizens and the leaders.

As the second outer wall and following Wall Maria, it was breached by the colossal Titan in 850, but the breach was also closed by Eren with the help of the research corps. It used to be thought that there had been another breakthrough when the Titans appeared in it just over a month later. But the Titans turned out to be from a different source.

The anime explored very different events in the anime. Because we also saw events like Wall Rose Invasion, something we never thought we’d see because of the trust we had in the investigative corps and the military. During the invasion of Wall Rose, the Beast Titan had turned the inhabitants of Ragako into mindless Titans who roamed around Wall Rose. Eren was nearly captured by the Colossal and the Armored Titans during this incident, but it was thanks to the combined efforts of the military that he was recovered and Wall Rose was cleared of all Titans.

Wall Sheena

Wall Sheena is the inner wall in Attack on Titan, protecting the kingdom and district where the king lived along with other nobles. The towns of Wall Sheena were protected by the military police, who served under Rod Reiss in his day. There is an underground and poorer society, which is more prone to crimes within the neighborhood.

Titans in the Walls

As the innermost wall in the city, Wall Sheena’s breach would likely have spelled disaster for Paradis Island, as there probably would have been no way to recover from such an attack. This explained why as the series expanded, the investigative corps started hunting the Titans so they stopped breaking walls frequently.

Because every time this would happen, it means the Titans have found a way to bond that works. But what was more important to the story of the series was exploring the outside world and revealing the real truth about the walls and what exists inside.

What’s inside the walls in the attack on Titan?

As we had seen several times in the series and then it was later revealed and officially confirmed. The wall is actually made of a bunch of colossal titans standing side by side. And they would serve as the island’s absolute defense if anything were to happen. At least, that’s what the outsiders thought.

But the reality was a bit more complicated because there were many restrictions and specific requirements that had to be met in order to free the Colossal Titans within the walls, as we had seen when Eren did it. So if the kingdom had such knowledge from the outside, they would have planned an attack and probably conquered Paradis Island before they could bolster their defenses.

So as the series progressed, a lot of information was revealed about the Titans and how they work. Then we also found out about Zeke and Eren’s plan that twisted the story. And when the anime also changed studios, a lot of things changed, like Eren used to be. He managed to deviate from his original ambition to kill all the Titans so that everyone could live in peace. And that in itself took away from the hype of the story and caused the Attack on Titan Fandom to get upset.

But since we’ve heard of the rumble, it might have been a shame if the story ended without us seeing the rumble take place. So it must have been an event that has yet to happen so that we can see the scale of such a legendary event that has never been seen before.
