7 Anime-Like Bubbles You Must See

Tetsurou Araki’s post-apocalyptic animated film ‘Bubble’ tells a story of love, sacrifice and sorrow. Once bubbles begin to rain on the world and are eventually confined to Tokyo – making it the epicenter of the unexplained phenomena – the catastrophe that unfolds in the following months leaves many children without families. However, they continue to reclaim the abandoned city by using it as a battleground for parkour team battles. Among these teenagers, Hibiki is the most natural and gifted player. While his life revolves around the only sport he knows and loves, everything changes when he meets a mysterious girl named Uta.

The duo’s dramatic love story might bring tears to anyone’s eyes, and viewers captivated by their emotional story may want to see more similar anime. If you are one of them, we have a few recommendations for you. Most of these anime like ‘Bubble’ are available for streaming on Netflix, Hulu, Crunchyroll, Funimation or Amazon Prime.

7. A Silent Voice (2016)

As a young boy, Shouya Ishida hurts and bullies his deaf classmate Shouko Nishimiya. As soon as the school takes action, his friends start pointing at him, and he is suddenly isolated. Over the next few years, Shouya struggles to make peace with his past, but one day decides to make amends by getting to know Shouko and eventually apologizing to her. Although the relationship between Shouya and Shouko is very different from that between Hibiki and Uta, the complex bond between the two couples helps them to become better people and to understand themselves generously. You can check out Shouya Ishida’s emotional and heartwarming story here.

6. Your name. (2016)

Mitsuha Miyamizu has always dreamed of living in Tokyo, while Taki Tachibana is currently struggling to keep his life in the city together. So when the two strangers’ lives are exchanged one ordinary morning and they wake up in each other’s bodies, it marks the beginning of their journey to follow each other as their destinies are intertwined in complex ways. Although there are few similarities between ‘Your Name.’ and ‘Bubble’, if you’re looking for a unique movie with romantic subtext themes, chances are you’ll like the first one too. The film can be streamed here.

5. 5 Centimeters per second (2007)

Though Takaki Toono and Akari Shinohara are madly in love, their fate seems to drive them further apart, no matter how much they want to be in each other’s company. Despite living far from each other, they keep their promise to keep in touch, even as the relentless zeitgeist tries to rid them of precious memories. Focusing primarily on the complexities of long-distance relationships, “5 Centimeters per Second” tells a love story that inspires hope, much like “Bubble.”

4. Weathering With You (2019)

Like ‘Bubble’, ‘Weathering with You’ is set in Tokyo and tells the story of a boy who meets a mysterious girl with supernatural powers. However, her powers come at a hefty price that ultimately challenges the bond they’ve formed by sharing each other’s time. With so many similarities in the central premise of both anime, it goes without saying that fans of one of the films will most likely be entertained by the other as well. You can stream “Weathing with You” here.

3. The Garden of Words (2013)

‘The Garden of Words’ follows Takao Akizuki, an aspiring shoemaker who accidentally meets a ravishing woman named Yukari Yukino while working on designs in a lush green garden in Tokyo. The first meeting paves the way for countless others during the rainy season as the duo get to know each other. Takao and Yukari mysteriously help each other with pressing personal issues and grow closer over time. But with the rainy season nearing its end, the duo must finally pass a grueling test of their bond similar to Hibiki and Uta’s dilemma when the former’s sister begins to call her back to her roots. You can watch ‘The Garden of Words’ here.

2. Your lie in April (2014 – 2015)

“Your Lie in April” isn’t a movie like “Bubble” but is arguably one of the most painful romantic anime ever made. The show revolves around Kousei Arima, a prodigious pianist whose career collapses after a tragedy. Gripped by grief and despair, unable to hear the music from his own piano, Kousei meets eccentric violinist Kaori Miyazono. She not only manages to put a smile on his face, but also convinces him to resume his piano playing, which has been on hold for a while.

As the tunes of Kousei’s instrument stun people again, he rediscovers himself in the process. The unlikely couple’s emotional bond is quite similar to the relationship that Hibiki and Uta share. That’s why we recommend that fans of ‘Bubble’ add ‘Your Lie in April’ to their watchlist. The anime can be streamed here.

1. Hotarubi no Mori e (2011)

Six-year-old Hotaru Takegawa finds herself in a world of trouble after getting lost in the woods near her grandfather’s house. When it looks like she’ll likely pay a heavy price for her recklessness, a mysterious boy named Gin offers her much-needed help. However, due to a curse, he cannot be touched by a human and so he rudely refuses Hotaru’s loving embrace.

In the years that follow, the duo grows closer, grappling with the supernatural boundaries that separate them. Gin’s dilemma may remind fans of “Bubble” of Uta’s struggle and her ultimate sacrifice. Therefore, fans will surely find it fascinating to watch another film based on a somewhat similar dilemma that beautifully encapsulates love.
